What is it about?
Iron deficiency anaemia is a common reason for referral for colonoscopy and FIT is recommended to assist triage. We investigated use of both FIT and an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm score which identifies patients at risk of colorectal cancer using blood count parameters, age and sex to prioritise patients for endoscopy

Why is it important?
AI learning may be a more useful trigger tool than Hb for referral for colonoscopy
Perspectives
This study is being followed up by further work I hope this paper will cause people to think about the possible role of AI in this field The AI algorithm has potential to be performed in routine laboratories as part of clinical service and could be used for early identification of patients at risk of colon cancer including those who do not wish to undertake faecal tests or take part in screening
