What is it about?
Caesarean section is one of the most widely used surgical interventions in Latin America and in many cases it is performed with no clear medical indication. Our objective was to analyse the relationship between reported indications for caesareans and support for that indication in the clinical record in four Mexican hospitals. The main results show that supporting clinical information for indications of C-section were found in only 45% of the cases considered.

Why is it important?
Unnecessary caesarean sections increase maternal and child morbidity and mortality.
Perspectives
Mexico faces an epidemic caesarean section. Individual and structural-level interventions to reduce the caesarean rate and address the problem of non-medically justified caesarean sections are critical. Better documentation in the clinical record, closer supervision and analysis of the structural issues contributing to the high caesarean rates are all initial steps that should be taken to address this challenge.
