What is it about?

This paper looks at different views of the appropriate way to fund and deliver health care, and considers which important goods are promoted best by different approaches. It is argued for example, that funding health care through the purchase of private health insurance promotes individual liberty, whereas systems which require people to contribute to the cost of universal health care through taxation limit personal freedom. In this paper, I argue that cooperative participation in funding universal health care through taxation actually promotes important freedoms, and promotes and preserves health more effectively than systems which do not require such participation.

Why is it important?

Access to health care is argued to be an important human right, and is essential for us to enjoy good quality of life. Cooperating to meet the cost of health care is a better way of ensuring that everyone has access to care, and actually promotes health and liberty for everyone, even those who can afford to pay for health care privately.
