What is it about?

African cattle have evolved in the hot tropical environmental conditions of Africa. This paper explains the biological mechanisms of thermotolerance in African cattle including shiny and light coat color, ability to increased sweating, and cellular and molecular mechanisms. Signature positive selection in the genome of African cattle in comparison with Asian-European taurine cattle breeds helped us to explore genomic regions that contribute to the superior thermotolerance mechanisms in African cattle breeds.

Why is it important?

Exploring and understanding the genomic regions that contribute to thermotolerance mechanisms in African cattle breeds help to use them in genomic selection programs for high producing and Thermo susceptible breeds.
