Improving transport container design to reduce broiler chicken PSE (pale, soft, exudative) meat in Brazil

Why is it important?

Science has provided much talk and little solution to reduce transport stress for meat animals. In this work, we tested a feasible, innovative, ethical and relevant solution. PSE is a meat of lower quality even if used for further processing. It is estimated that the industry could provide 6% more breast weight if the stress before slaughter was relieved. By improving the lorry design, it resulted in better meat. There is more than 50% reduction in PSE incidence if the truck is designed to push air from the front to the back. This lorry is especially useful during summers or all-year in tropical countries. Animal welfare is improved. The extra meat yield is also an interesting bonus.
