What is it about?
As a result of significant change and resultant decline, infrastructure in rural Australia is often in a state of decay, abandonment, or malfunction. This paper examines the way residents navigate these infrastructures, both materially and culturally.

Why is it important?
Ethnographic studies of infrastructure in rural Australia are very limited. Thus, this research helps to begin a more comprehensive understanding of the unique ways infrastructure's absence and presence are felt in rural Australia.
Perspectives
As someone who comes not only from rural Australia, but from the very region under study, it is upsetting to see how little interest the experiences of rural space and place are given ethnographically. I hope that this article encourages others to think about rural Australia, if not through the effects of infrastructure, then with the attention to detail and diversity that so many other places across the globe are given.
