What is it about?

Many people have highlighted the value of academics working together with voluntary sector organisations and others. This article describes one such partnership, and reflects on the challenges that it involved, how they were responded to, and lessons that have been learned.

Why is it important?

There is growing interest in co-production in research, but there is a lot of variation in how this works in practice and many pitfalls. This article emphasises that every partnership and project is different but suggests effective strategies and lessons that may be able to inform other initiatives.

Perspectives

This paper draws together the experiences of myself and my colleague from a programme of work lasting around four years. For myself it was a very important learning experience, and through this article hopefully some of that experience can be beneficial for others.
