What is it about?

Little is known about molecular mechanisms involved in gonad differentiation in sturgeon species. We have shawn that in immature gonads (stage I) of great sturgeon, only cyp17a1 expressed in male gonads, while other genes(sox9, dmrt1, ar mRNA) did not express.

Why is it important?

The obtained results provide a foundation for further research on sex differentiation and developing strategies for the sexing of sturgeon for aquaculture.

Perspectives

This article can help sturgeon aquaculturists to separate males and females in primary ages. Indeed, this work can decrease sturgeon culture costs.
