What is it about?

We investigated Staphylococcus aureus in 73 children undergoing tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis. Samples were collected from the tonsillar surface, tonsillar core and throat after surgery. S. aureus was the most frequently isolated bacterium and was found most often inside the tonsils. The strains showed considerable genetic diversity, and more than half carried genes encoding superantigenic toxins. We also identified methicillin-resistant strains and other important antibiotic-resistance mechanisms.

Why is it important?

The high prevalence of S. aureus in the tonsillar core suggests that these bacteria may contribute to persistent or recurrent infections while remaining difficult to detect using surface swabs alone. The presence of toxin and resistance genes highlights the pathogenic potential of these strains and the importance of accurate microbiological testing in children with recurrent tonsillitis.

Perspectives

We believe this study draws attention to the tonsillar core as an important reservoir of potentially virulent S. aureus. Understanding the diversity and resistance of these strains may support better diagnosis and treatment decisions.
