What is it about?

Voice environment of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) may be an important factor for the language development of very preterm children. Voice environment can be assessed using the Language Environment Analysis (LENA) system. In this study, the validity of the LENA system was assessed in two NICUs supporting parent-infant closeness.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that LENA provides valid information on adult words in NICU, but information on child vocalizations and silence is less valid at this very early age. These results are important, since they provide further, specific knowledge on the assessment of very early voice environment of very preterm children.

Perspectives

PhD student Eva Ståhlberg-Forsén did a great job as a first author of the present article. The joint collaboration together with NICU in Turku University Hospital in Finland and NICU in Tallinn Children's Hospital in Estonia made a special, very nice flavor on this study. We hope that this paper provides information which can be used in the care of very preterm children.
