What is it about?

Migraine affects 10–20% of children. Migraine is associated to increased risk for cardiovascular disease / stroke in adults. Study on this association in children are scarce. In 30 children (16 male) with recent onset migraine biochemical profile, glucose homeostasis were measured. Vascular function was analyzed by flow mediated dilatation and arterial structure by carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and compared with that of 32 age, sex and auxologically matched children (17 male). Children with migraine presented with significantly thicker cIMT than the control group (0.48 ± 0.07 mm vs 0.45 ± 0.04, p < 0.05). Considering the recent onset of migraine, primitive vascular function abnormalities could be considered responsible for the development of migraine in this cohort.
