What is it about?

Left unaddressed, many challenging behaviours associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder can lead to an excluded future. The application of self-management techniques to reduce challenging behaviours has been explored as a treatment option, and was found to offer an effective behaviour management solution that may empower individuals on the spectrum.

Why is it important?

Studies included in this review have been subjected to the most thorough quality assessment standards available, outlined in the U.S. Department of Education What Works Clearinghouse guidelines (Version 3.0, 2013). This review expands upon the findings presented by the National Autism Center, National Standards Project, Phase 2 (2015) by specifically addressing an application of self-management interventions to challenging behaviour.

Perspectives

This paper was written with the intent of helping devoted teachers, clinicians and other stakeholders who often encounter challenging behaviour in their students with ASD. Faced with increasing funding challenges to support students on the spectrum, self-management techniques offer a potential solution to teach students to manage their own behaviours, paving the way to independence while simultaneously improving classroom management.
