What is it about?

Bleb-related infection (BRI) is a major complication following glaucoma filtering surgery that can result in severe visual disturbances. However, an effective treatment protocol has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to report the efficacy of the predetermined treatment protocol of the Collaborative Bleb-related Infection Incident and Treatment Study (CBIITS) which was a prospective, observational, cohort study conducted at 34 clinical centres in Japan.

Why is it important?

We could not show that the superiority of the treatment was not definitively determined because of the small number of BRI patients, however, the treatment protocol shown in the study might be a valuable treatment regime.

Perspectives

Based on the present study, as well as previous studies, BRI is still an important clinical condition following glaucoma filtering surgery, even with immediate intensive treatment consisting of massive antibacterial drugs and vitreous surgery when necessary. Presently, we recommend early consultation and patient education regarding this condition, as well as additional preventative measures such as repair of bleb leakage for better prognoses of eyes with a filtering bleb.
