What is it about?

The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of EMS during HD in terms of changes in muscle strength and size, physical function, QOL, and biochemical parameters.

Why is it important?

This study is the first to indicate muscle size improvement by using MRI in addition to improvement of muscle strength and physical function following intradialytic EMS.

Perspectives

EMS in this study could be an effective exercise training tool for HD patients with either muscle wasting, weakness, or sarcopenia, but 8 weeks may be too short to establish the effects on QOL. Large-scale and prolonged studies with more evaluation items are recommended to further establish the efficacy of the intradialytic EMS.
