Why is it important?
Frailty is a decrease in the body's ability to withstand stresses, such as surgery. It becomes more common with age. It increases the risk associated with an operation and should be assessed in the pre-operative clinic. Memory testing should also occur as this has implications for anyone having surgery.
Perspectives
We have both worked together as specialists in anaesthesia and medicine for older people, to assess patients being considered for surgery. This is a complex area and there has been only a little research. We provide a summary of our opinions given our experiences.
