What is it about?

In this publication we extend the role of succinate and its receptor (GPR91) to the regulation of immune responses, beyond the initial description as an endogenous adjuvant enhancing dendritic cell function. We describe that GPR91 is also expressed on mast cells and more importantly we demonstrate that GPR91 plays an important role propagating arthritis response, (eg. by autocrine and exocrine transmission of danger signals in macrophages)

Perspectives

This publication is better understood in the context of other articles by our group (Refs 16 and 39 of the paper) and others (Ref 38). Together, these articles demonstrate the autocrine and exocrine role of succinate sensing immunologic danger and alerting neighboured cells of the upcoming treat. This is a very effective mechanism to prepare cell to fight infections, however if the trigger is an harmless antigen this metabolic "chain reaction" could have very detrimental effects for the host.
