What is it about?

EuroPrevall is one of the largest studies on food allergy in the world. It is the first study in general population (community) in India and conducted in Mysore and Bangalore in Karnataka. The study revealed that India has the lowest prevalence of food allergies in the world the reasons for which needs further elucidation. It is most likely due to environmental factors and dietary habits.

Why is it important?

Studies in the western world have shown that food allergies start increasing after two decades after asthma and allergic rhinitis have started to increase. Earlier studies in India have shown that asthma is increasing in India over the last two decades. it is possible that we are at the cusp of an increase and it is useful to have baseline information and also to identify the protective factors for the low food allergy prevalence in India

Perspectives

The study followed a standard rigorous protocol as part of the Europrevall study and generated data that could be compared to other European countries. A single central lab analysing all the data using the same kits meant that the results are indeed comparable.
