What is it about?
This is the 1st series of successful pre-clinical large animal experiments comparing machine perfusion (MP) at 21'C (dual pressures) combined with a hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrier (HBOC) solution against cold storage (CS). The animals were followed for 5 days and extensive studies with transcritptomics, proteomics and metabolomics were performed. MP showed significantly better results than CS for liver preservation.

Why is it important?
This work shows the benefits of effective oxygenation ex-vivo at subnormothermic temperatures as a new way to preserve liver allografts prior to transplantation.
