What is it about?

This article examines the media coverage of Peter Dutton's 2016 remarks, along with source documents 'quoted' by two conservative journalists in support of Dutton's narrative; namely a 1976 cabinet submission and a paper by terrorism researcher, Andrew Zammit. The authors found that the documents had been misrepresented and 'cherry-picked' for evidence to support a pre-determined position, rather than a balanced interrogation of the facts. Furthermore, progressive journalists, with one exception, framed Dutton's comments as ‘scapegoating’ but did not revisit or challenge the way that original documents were being mis-quoted by the conservative media.
