What is it about?
Food selection, is it a function of preference or plant food availability in Mountain bongos? Food selection examines the variations in food items consumption contributing to an understanding of resource partitioning, habitat preference and competition. Knowledge on dietary selection, habitat association and group composition for the elusive wild Mountain bongo is scanty. We evaluated food selection and preference for Mountain bongos using a small habituated population held captive at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy

Why is it important?
With the ongoing reintroduction of Mountain bongos into Mount Kenya forest, an understanding of seasonal variability in food selection, preference and an assessment of food availability within the reintroduction site will help predict adaptability in a new habitat. Peter Fundi Chuka University
Perspectives
This article portrays the Mountain Bongo as highly plastic herbivore in terms of food choice an indication they can cope with seasonal variations in food availability and overcome dietary challenges once reintroduced to Mount Kenya forest. However, in depth studies will help unveil bongo’s nutritional goals.
