Why is it important?

It is essential to maintain the productivity of our agricultural land for our survival as a species. In order to assess agricultural methods and practices we need dependable monitoring tools so that we can make the best decisions. Monitoring indicator organisms is one of the most cost effective measures to do this but is rarely implemented. We contribute information on ground beetles in the hope that widespread environmental monitoring in agricultural areas will be implemented.

Perspectives

This publication contributes to the knowledge of ground beetles in arable environments. Although the focus was on the selection of indicators that could signal effects of GM maize, the information can be used to select carabid indicators which could be used for widespread agricultural monitoring. This is an important issue as we need tools to inform us of the effects of natural and anthropic changes to the agricultural environments that we depend on.
