What is it about?

In the article “Images of psychiatry and psychiatrists” (Stuart H et al., 2015) there are important findings that show a negative image and perception of psychiatry and psychiatrists, drawn from a range of faculties which also likely mirror the society image at-large. It is important to change this negative image and to promote destigmatization of psychiatry alongside with an improvement in our communication skills.

Why is it important?

This comment to the findings described in the article “Images of psychiatry and psychiatrists” (Stuart H et al., 2015) provides examples within the fields of communication, information, knowledge and prevention how to change the negative views on psychiatry and psychiatrist.

Perspectives

I believe that it is important that we as psychiatrist are aware of the negative attitudes in the society towards us psychiatrists and our profession and are willing to encounter those perceptions by improving communication with the general population about evidence based treatment methods and our possibilities as well as about shortcomings of our therapeutic arsenal. This is a comment to the findings made in the article "Images of psychiatry and psychiatrists" by Stuart H, Satorius N, Liinamaa T and the Image Study group (2015).
