This article provides a comprehensive discussion of the role of development finance institutions in development. It analyses the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), with a particular focus on how these organisations promote development both in South Africa and in the African continent.

Why is it important?

Development Finance Institutions and State Owned Enterprises are increasingly playing a central role in developmental and regional strategies of some emerging economies. Bringing the state back in is also a theme gaining currency in a climate where there is growing mistrust of the commitment of private companies in aiding governments' developmental objectives.

Perspectives

The role of development finance institutions in South Africa is under-explored. This article explains their workings and limitations.
