What is it about?

It is important for all members of our health care teams to understand the differences between the different risks involved for women who have diabetes preexisting their pregnancy compared to women who have diabetes that develops during the pregnancy. Sometimes women are unaware of the long term risks for themselves and their infants from development of gestational diabetes. Here we aim to inform health professionals of the important differences and how they can assist to improve outcomes.

Perspectives

As a pharmacist researching gestational diabetes and treatment and risks, I understand what we as a profession thought we knew regarding diabetes and what we really know. I want to help bridge that gap for us and help improve our support of women at this very important time of their life. This is a teachable moment in their lives and we as a profession can make a difference.
