Why is it important?

Wang’s unusual life was full of contradictions that were that “were not only … his own, [but] belonged also to a part of the difficult course of an entire generation”--not only the generation of Wang's classmates who became academics in China but also a generation of intellectuals of Asian descent seeking recognition in academia in America.

Perspectives

This publication brings to light Hao Wang's little known contributions to the forging intellectual partnerships between academia and the emerging computer industry. Some insights into the challenges Wang faced as an intellectual of Asian descent in America were confirmed by Wang's widow, Hanne Tierney, a performance artist and artistic director.
