What is it about?

Severe HG resistant to drug treatment may bring women to extreme sufferings caused by vomiting, weight loss and dehydration. Autonomic nervous system responses with an adrenergic overstimulation located in locus coeruleus area of brainstem is involved in such cases. After proper rehydration treatment ,an off-label treatment with clonidine patches releasing 5mg over 5 days may substantially reduce the adrenergic overflow and improve symptoms, leading to recovery and discharge from hospital. The same treatment is renewed while at home.

Why is it important?

Under medical supervision , it is an effective treatment in most cases. More than 150 women were treated with minimal side effects compared to benefits on quality of life and pregnancy outcomes.

Perspectives

More research is needed to explain the drug effect on autonomous nervous system activity and the control of nausea and vomiting: pregnant women affected by severe HG should be studied by non invasive methods
