What is it about?

Some people desire gender reassignment surgery in order to avoid painful psychological issues. But therapists wishing to work with those issues are often accused of trans-phobia or of trying to practice conversion therapy. This can lead to a mutual evasion of the psychological, which results in unnecessary, damaging medical treatment that the patient later comes to regret.

Why is it important?

There has been a huge increase in the number of people identifying as trans in the last few years. Therapists need to find ways of working effectively with the underlying psychological issues if we are to minimize the risk of unnecessary medical transitions.

Perspectives

The above issues are tackled from the perspective of my contrasting psychotherapeutic therapeutic work with two trans-identifying clients.
