What is it about?

What do Israeli policy makers think Israel should do about the Palestinian issue, and what does the Israeli public think? This paper categorizes the main policy proposals currently discussed in the Israeli political scene for addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and shows why Israel's coalition government system leads to incoherent policy on the issue.

Why is it important?

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is of enormous interest to scholars and policymakers, yet the internal Israeli policy debate on this issue is often overlooked or oversimplified. It is impossible to understand Israeli actions, the constraints on Israeli decision-makers and the trajectory of the conflict itself without a deeper understanding of this debate.

Perspectives

Far too often I see journalists, politicians and scholars misinterpret Israeli policy and actions in the Israeli-Palestinian arena because they don't understand the internal Israeli policy debate or how the Israeli government system works. I hope this paper goes some way towards redressing that.
