What is it about?

I examine how media and their use are now a major source of political disenfranchisement and political change in the United States and how Guy Debord's writings on spectacular society capture most of the major trends contributing to these changes in political culture, in particular the rise of disinformation, the rise of political stars, and the transformation of citizenship into spectatorship.

Why is it important?

It is mistaken to view Donald Trump as an anomaly. He is possibly the most extreme example of the way in which media and spectatorship are transforming Western liberal politics but the same trends are at work in Canada, Russia, France, Italy and other assumed democracies.

Perspectives

For me, it opened a new way of looking at American and state politics. The ideas in this paper build on ideas and insights originally suggested by Guy Debord to understand the student rebellions of 1968.
