What is it about?
This article traces the use of the theory of Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci by both the government of Evolution Morales and left wing critics. It argues that Gramsci offers an effective way to understand the interlinked periods of crisis, social movements and consolidation of the state in Bolivia from the late-1990s onwards. However, the presentation of these processes has been influenced too by political developments in the country, particularly the conflict over the construction of a highway through the TIPNIS.
