What is it about?

Marine Controlled Source Electromagnetic (MCSEM) methods are used to derive the electrical properties of a wide range of sub sea floor targets including gas hydrate reservoirs. In most MCSEM surveys, the deep tow transmitter is used with a long horizontal electric dipole being towed above the sea floor, which is capable to transmit dipole moments in the order of up to several thousand Ampere meters. The newly developed deployed transmitter uses two horizontal orthogonal electrical dipoles and can land on the sea floor.

Why is it important?

The most extensive applications of MCSEM to date are the predrill appraisal of seismically identified direct hydrocarbon indicators to avoid drilling dry holes associated with structures characterized by strong seismic reflections. Structures with high conductivity can be clearly distinguished from resistive hydrocarbons by using MCSEM.

Perspectives

In this paper, we introduced the research and development of two effective MCSEM transmitters by presenting key technologies in hardware development and implementation details. The results showed that the two transmitters are successful that can be used as the effective source for gas hydrate exploration.
