What is it about?

The EU Less Favored Areas ( as set out in the EU Regulation 1305/2013 - Areas Facing Natural or Specific Constraints) are those areas in danger of abandonment of agricultural land-use and where the conservation of the countryside is necessary. They exhibit all of the following handicaps: land of poor productivity; the product which results from low productivity of the natural environment; and a low or dwindling population predominantly dependent on agricultural activity. Delineation of these areas is a critical issue addressing the relevant payment. A set of factsheets were provided by the EC Joint Research Center for mapping the proposed common soil, climate and terrain criteria. The present study was examined the existing soil classification system and maps based on World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 2006 (WRB) in terms of estimating thresholds for Agricultural Areas with Natural Constraints. Why is it important?

This study provides a unique demonstration of how the harmonized soil information and unified soil classification system as WRB can contribute smoothly implementation of EU Rural Development Policies.
