What is it about?

This publication tries to compare the impact of dental caries on activities of daily living among visually impaired adolescents and their sighted peers. The comparison was made before and after treatment of dental caries among the two groups. It was found that the two groups were affected in similar ways with no significant differences. The impact on daily living was high before treatment and significantly low after treatment for both groups.

Why is it important?

This will be the first published study on impact of dental caries on visually impaired individuals in Nigeria. This study shows that visually impaired individuals have similar impacts of dental caries on their quality of life as their sighted peers. This study offers opportunity to appreciate impact of dental caries on visually impaired individuals. Oral health promotion and services should be extended to the visually impaired like their sighted peers to prevent the impact of dental caries.

Perspectives

This study enabled me to appreciate the impact of dental caries among visually impaired individuals who have little or no access to dental care and therefore gives me great joy in achieving this. It gives me the opportunity to present a case on behalf of visually impaired individuals in Nigeria. I will therefore recommend that more attention should be given to the oral health of visually impaired infividuals as much as it is given to sighted individuals.
