What is it about?

Babies born with rare types of kidney diseases may end up getting severely sick and die. These babies can be saved with kidney transplantations. Kidney transplantation is the best way to cure inborn kidney disorders resistant to medical treatment. In a kidney transplant you replace missing kidney functions by putting a new kidney into the patients- in our case the sick kids- abdomen. The kidney can be donated by a family member or an acquaintance, it can also be provided from a brain dead donor; like the one in our case. After the kidney transplantation this severely sick child had a growth spurt, reaching his desired weight and height within six months after surgery. Started talking and reached his neuro-psychological developmental milestones. It was a blessing to see this little boy enjoying his second chance in life and growing up with his family.

Why is it important?

Rare kidney diseases resistant to medical treatment can be cured successfully by timely kidney transplantation surgery. This should always be an option to discuss with the patient and families.

Perspectives

This article emphasizes the importance of organ donation be it live or deceased. How we can save lives of many babies like we describe here. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank to all organ donors and their families for their precious gift of life.
