Investments in family planning service delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa have been modest for decades but are now increasing. Contraceptive use of modern methods has recently increased and possibly will match if not exceed the pace of uptake of other regions in the past.

Why is it important?
The Sub-Saharan African region has shown the lowest levels of contraceptive practice for decades, while other low-resource regions, such as Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, have more rapidly rising levels of use. The underlying question is what future trends for the SSA region will be and why.
