What is it about?

The specific requirements of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) need to be addressed regarding appropriate health and social care provision. This paper reports on specific mental health issues. LGBT older people were surveyed and thirty six people people were interviewed. Mental health issues were a concern for many of the study participants. There is a need to develop mental health initiatives that support the principles of equality, inclusion and respect for diversity for this group.

Why is it important?

The findings demonstrate the importance of implementing appropriate and responsive mental health strategies that take account of the experiences address the unique needs of older people who identify as LGBT.

The findings revealed many important viewpoints and highlighted key issues for LGBT older people. I hope that the study results inform the practice of mental health practitioners and that they assist service providers in planning future health and social care developments for this population.
