What is it about?
The elemental composition of plants relate to their functional traits and thus represents good predictor of how plants and ecosystems work. Biodiversity is also widely recognised as an important driver of ecosystem functioning. I here review evidence indicating that plant elemental composition relates to their ecological niches and shifts in response to biotic and abiotic drivers. Ecosystem elementome diversity and distances will help investigate diversity-ecosystem functioning relationships and global change impacts on ecosystem functioning.
