What is it about?
Tree stems can emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas. We show that about one-third of methane emissions are being consumed by methane oxidising bacteria (MOB), during the vertical gas transportation, within two common subtropical lowland tree species' stems. If MOB are ubiquitous within the woody materials of other tree species globally, this may represent an important, yet previously unknown, methane sink.
