What is it about?
Tracheids in the xylem of conifers contain structures called bordered pits through which water flows from cell to cell. These pits appear to act as valves to block the passage of air that would obstruct the conducting ability of the cells. This study applies a computational solid mechanics approach to help us understand how much pressure is needed to activate the valve and seal the pit.
