What is it about?
Growth is a fundamental process of life that's usually measured as the accumulation of mass. But this approach ignores the developmental processes of shoot and root enlargement and branching. We show that fast growth is achieved in ways that depend on the ecology of the species. Plants from competitive habitats grow fast through gigantism, while those from disturbed habitats become branchier.
