What is it about?
When plants are exposed to environmental constraints that inhibit their photosynthetic activity, light energy absorbed in excess can cause oxidative degradation of macromolecules in the photosystems. Metabolites generated by the oxidation of the carotenoid beta-carotene act as signaling molecules that are sensed by plants to put in place defense and detoxification mechanisms, enhancing their stress tolerance
