What is it about?
Plants trade water for carbon during the day: they open some leaf pores to allow for CO2 diffusion while water unavoidably escapes the leaf. However, there are also significant water losses during the night, at a time when there is no carbon fixation, and we do not know why. This Viewpoint presents the state of the art on this topic along with a roadmap for future research
