What is it about?
Arbuscular mycorrhizas are widespread symbioses with soil fungi that support plant nutrition since dryland colonization 400 million years ago. Fungal development inside the living host cells is a key feature of this symbiosis. This study demonstrates that mature root tissues reactivate cell division-related processes to host these beneficial fungi.
