What is it about?

Root and stem pressures have long been known to play important roles in refilling winter-embolized vessels in some temperate tree species. Yet, differences in hydraulic performance between pressure-generating species and non-pressure-generating species are poorly understood. We show in the present study how hydraulic performances and detailed xylem anatomical characteristics are coupled to divergences in the ability (or inability) to generate positive pressure in sympatric temperate tree species.
