What is it about?

Signal perception of the plant hormone cytokinin is important to regulate numerous processes in plant growth and development. The subcellular localization of these receptors is an important feature that is under extensive study. We summarize the current knowledge on the relevance of the endoplasmic reticulum and the plasma membrane, respectively, for signal initiation. We present an integrative model that combines apparently controversial data on these different sites and suggest distinct functions for them in short and long distance cytokinin signaling.
