What is it about?
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) acquires its envelope by budding into cellular membranes. We recently showed that HCMV forms multiviral bodies as a so-far undescribed functional egress pathway resulting in the bulk release of large numbers of particles at once. Here we discuss the formation of these structures and the potential implications of this pathway for viral tropism.
