What is it about?

Single celled organisms including bacteria are at the mercy of their environment. Survival requires them to adapt quickly to changes in both nutrient availability and physical challenges including variations in temperature and pH. Here we show how one bacterium, E. coli, takes advantage of cell separation proteins with overlapping activities to successfully proliferate in acidic conditions.
