What is it about?
Heterocystous cyanobacteria are multicellular organisms in which growth requires intercellular molecular exchange that takes place through proteinaceous septal junctions. We show that pentapeptide-repeat, cytoplasmic-membrane protein HglK is required for the formation of fully functional septal junctions. Our results suggest a relevant role of peptapeptide-repeat proteins in cyanobacterial multicellularity.
