What is it about?
Escherichia coli respiratory complex I, a central enzyme complex of energy metabolism, contains nine iron-sulfur clusters as cofactors. We show that the deletion of genes coding the putative iron-sulfur cluster carrier proteins Mrp and NfuA significantly affects complex I activity and assembly. Furthermore, BolA, a poorly characterized protein seems to be important for the incorporation of one specific binuclear cluster called N1b into the complex.
