What is it about?

Assembly of the bacterial flagellum, and the invasion of host cells by gram-negative pathogens, requires an exceptionally rapid type of protein export termed type-III secretion. A variety of experiments indicate that the cargo-conducting channel in the flagellar export apparatus is formed by the protein FliP. Conserved charged residues within the channel are likely to have a key role in export, while strategically positioned hydrophobic residues could form a gasket around the cargo undergoing export.
